The great caste problem in Bihar

I was born in Bihar and have spent most of my life there in my village, and I genuinely hate people's mentality about "caste" and other caste-related stuff. And, sometimes, it becomes very frustrating to see this thing so deeply rooted in all aspects of life.

I am not saying that this caste problem is in Bihar only, but I am writing about Bihar because this is from my experience.

This post is going to be a collection of my experiences with in different situations and what I think about it. So... let's get to it.

1. Everyone asks you for your caste

This is the most weird experience I have ever had, like everyone asks for your caste. For example, while using any dating apps or when using apps to anonymously talk to someone, girls casually ask for your caste. And this happens only when you're connected to a person from Bihar or UP, and I rarely experienced this with a person from anywhere else.

When I came to my college, I started sitting with a friend from West Bengal from the first day and we became good friends. He didn't ever ask me for my caste, but one day I sat with a friend from Jharkhand and he immediately asks me for my caste. I am like, bro, are you for real?

2. People prefer professionals of their own caste

My own uncle was sick once, and he decided to go to a doctor of our own caste even though there are better alternatives and better urologist doctors in the area. But since they weren't from the same caste, he chose going to a doctor who is from the same caste.

Can you belive how deeply rooted is this thing? I mean, people will be looking for castes even during life and death situations.

I have called even my family members multiple times on this, but they just don't understand. No matter how much and what I say to them, it doesn't make any sense to them and they think I have gone crazy and have probably become "too" educated to ignore these things.

3. They marry in their own caste

Yes, I think this issue is present across India but it's very serious in Bihar and surrounding states like Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand as well.

Once a guy ran away with a girl from another caste and got married so family members disowned them. But this is not a big thing in India, right? Yes, not a big thing but after months girls parents called them back saying that they have accepted their marriage and want to make peace with them. And when they returned, they ended the girl's life. Yes, this is a real news.

This is just one of such cases, in fact, these things keep happening across India. Yes, still happens in 2026 as well.

Another case is from my own village as well. A guy used to talk to a girl of another caste and his father came to know that so he took his phone and prevented him from leaving his house for multiple days. And lastly, the guy ended his own life, and after 2-3 days the girl did the same too.

What a shame!

I get sooooo frustrated while talking about these things. And also feel so sad for the victims of these caste-related issues. We, as a society, need to do better. Yes, there was a time when caste was an important thing but times change, and people should be more accepting towards the change.

I'm still in my early 30s and I don't think this thing is going to be resolved in my lifetime.

But I really hope that it does.
